Is Indie The Way To Go?

After spending most of yesterday emailing and sending messages to blogs, I have decided that going Indie was the right choice for me.

I was requesting reviews of my new book, Invisible, and any other posting they would be willing to do about the release coming up on Friday. So far, the blogs that have responded have been very generous. If they can't review they have agreed to post links to the Invisible Goodreads page and the release party. In a few hours the release party went from 32 going to over 100 going. That is amazing!

I owe that to Lisa of Penny For My Thoughts Book Blog - she is the undisputed queen of getting people to these kinds of events.

A couple of the blogs even requested copies of Saving Cassie to review.

The willingness of everyone to help an unknown indie author is amazing. Thank you to everyone who has agreed to review or post - you have no idea how much it means to me.

On to other things...

I hope everyone is coming to the release party on Friday. There will be games and giveaways!

Invisible Release Day Party

Invisible will get a book spotlight on One More Chapter for two weeks starting on February 3, watch for it! Both reviewers requested Arcs of Invisible. Keep your fingers crossed that they will give me favorable reviews. Then, Saving Cassie will be in the spotlight for two weeks.

In March I will be having a couple of author spotlights on One More Chapter.

And... Invisible is getting it's very own two week blog tour! February 24 to March 7 Invisible will be making the rounds. Thank you to Irresistible Reads Book Tours. If you need any promotion services go check out her page - she is having a 1/2 price sale right now. What a great way to stretch those marketing dollars.

So many opportunities have come my way to get the word out about my books. It's as if the stars all came into alignment...

I have decided that I want to pay it forward. I haven't decided exactly what that will be. Maybe weekly book or author spotlights...

Don't forget to click on the Giveaway tab and enter to win an ecopy of Saving Cassie!

Until next time.

Happy reading!

Self Publishing Lessons Learned

With the release of Invisible on the horizon (only 12 days to go) I have been reflecting on the journey that has brought me to the point of publishing my second novel. The lessons I have learned along the way have changed how I look at books and publishing.

Here are the lessons I have taken away from this experience (in no particular order):

1.  Publishing a book is more than just uploading a file and clicking on the publish button. When I signed up for NaNoWriMo in 2012 I had no idea what lie ahead for me. Writing the book is the easy part. The hard part comes when you start to edit. I was naïve when I published Saving Cassie - I thought the free editing would be enough.

2. You get what you pay for. A free edit sounded like a way to save some money and get a professionally edited book. Nothing against the editor - she did what she promised: a final edit for a book ready to be published. Again, due to my inexperience I thought this would be enough. After paying for a full edit for Invisible (many thanks to Kathy Lapeyre of Indie Editing by Kathy for all her help and suggestions on how to make Invisible better) and going through the process I realize how inadequate the free edit was. Don't get me wrong, Saving Cassie is a great story - a full edit would have made it an awesome book. After much deliberation I have decided to leave Saving Cassie as it is as a reminder to the lessons I have learned.

3.  Connecting with readers is hard. Take Facebook for instance - I have almost 2,000 followers on my author page but I haven't sold nearly that many books. Part of the problem is just the sheer number of free romances available. I need to find that "magic" post that convinces everyone to go out and buy my book. I am an introvert so putting myself out there has been a big challenge.

4.  Publishing on Amazon and B&N is free but it takes money to get a book ready for publishing. A professional cover (thankfully I found Sprinkles On Top Studios - she does great work and has some awesome premade covers for reasonable prices. I did win a free custom cover for Invisible from CoverPub and it is beautiful!

These are just a few of the bigger lessons I learned from publishing Saving Cassie. One plus side of the way I learned by doing - I actually published a book. If I had done the research I may not have jumped into it with both feet the way I did.

Now is the time for the shameless plug... please buy Invisible when it is released on January 31. Add it to your TBR and enter to win a free copy!

Until next time!

Reviews, reviews, reviews - Calling everyone with a blog

It's 19 days until the release of Invisible, a contemporary romance. This is my second book and I am looking forward to this release.

I have learned so much since the release of Saving Cassie back in October. Invisible has been fully edited professionally and my editor, Kathy Lapeyre, has given me tons of tips to make my writing better!

I am looking for review blogs or author blogs willing to review Invisible or to post about the release.  ARCs should be ready to go some time this week and I am hoping to get some reviews up by release day. If you are willing to help out or you know a blogger that would be interested, please email me at remenickywrites@yahoo.com or message me on my Facebook author page.

Also, I will be setting up a release day party so if you would like to donate anything it would be appreciated. Watch my Facebook author page for details.

Thank you, everyone, for all the love and support I have received during this incredible journey.

Looking Ahead in 2014

This post is coming to you from snowy Northeast Indiana. The snow is coming down and they are predicting wind and frigid temps starting tonight - that should make the Monday commute very interesting.

I have the radio on for some musical inspiration as I think about what 2014 will bring.

First off, my second book, Invisible, will be released January 31 on Amazon. Hopefully both the ebook and the paperback will be available on that date.

I am deep in the editing process and I am learning so much that will make my next book even better. Many thanks to Indie Editing by Kathy for all her help and encouragement during this process. When I received the first file back from Kathy the red was daunting... it seems I have a bit of a problem staying in the same tense. Then we moved on to pronouns. Now, it is writing in active versus passive voice. I am learning so much!

After Invisible is released on Amazon and B&N, I will be going back and formatting Saving Cassie for B&N for all you Nook users.

February will bring book spotlights on both Invisible and Saving Cassie on One More Chapter. Hopefully, this will help with book sales. Then I will have an author spotlight in March and a couple of takeovers. That should be fun! Thanks to the ladies over at One More Chapter for all their help.

Once I have Invisible and Saving Cassie taken care of I will resume work on my third book, Ragan's Song, Book 2 in my Fairfield Corners series. You'll find out why Ragan left in the middle of the night and what happens when she returns to town three years later.

I haven't planned out any farther than that, life tends to laugh at too much planning!

I hope your 2014 is fabulous...
