Why I’m Not Jumping On The TSU Bandwagon
There’s been a lot of buzz about the new social media site
TSU and how “everyone” is jumping over there from Facebook. I’m not convinced
that a new social media site is the best use of my time. Facebook is already a
big time-suck. Why would I sign up for another?
The indie author community is up in arms that Facebook is
going to start charging for you to make sales posts. Hmmm… Yes, it’s a bummer
but can you blame them? It should be no surprise, over the last couple of years
organic post reach has dwindled for pages to almost nothing. We were all used
to running around on Facebook posting “Buy My Book” but how much did that
really help our sales? Facebook is a SOCIAL media site, not a free advertising
site. We all shout that Facebook is greedy but what other type of business lets
you use their product for free to sell your product? It’s time we indies pulled
up our big girl panties and faced the fact that the age of promoting our books
for free is drawing to a close. Yes, it’s expensive to promote our books and
finding new ways to promote without spending a fortune will be hard. We are
creative, we can do it!
Let’s put it this way. Up until I ran a free/$.99 promotion
this month I was lucky if my royalty payments were $10. That’s right, even with
all the posts on Facebook my book sales stunk. It boils down to the fact that
you get what you pay for – free posting gets you a lot of nothing. For my
promotion I spent about $40 for my free book to be listed on some websites and
included in some emails by sites that specialize in free/cheap ebooks. Over 5
days my free book was downloaded over 17K times and I sold over 100 copies of
my $.99 ebook. For an author that was lucky to sell 50 books per year that is
HUGE!
So, I will continue to connect with readers on Facebook but
I am not convinced that social media is the best use of my time and/or
advertising dollars.
Until next time,
Happy reading!

New Release - Tempering Steel by Lea Barrymire
Connor’s resolve to stay away from Margie weakens when she takes in his packmate. Fighting his inner animal and jealousy makes him question his decision to leave women and love alone.
They’re thrown together to catch a trapper or hunter threatening the pack. But once things start to heat up even the possibility of danger doesn’t cool the tension between them.
First kiss:
“You… you shot me.”
“I did.”
“Why?”
He was already listing to one side and she rushed forward to help me sit against a tree. “Because you needed to calm down. I need to look at this wolf and I can’t do that if you’ve got him all pissed off.”
“Dangerous.”
His eyes drooped. She leaned down and kissed the lines of confusion between his brows. “I know. That’s why I gave him a little more than you. He’ll be sleeping like a cub in about two minutes.”
“Sorry about being mad. She called me that before she left.” Connor mumbled.
The slurred words had her ears perking up like a fox’s after hearing the squeak of a mouse. She. Margie squashed the questions bubbling up. Instead she turned, gathered her gear and slowly approached the downed wolf. In the back of her mind Connor’s words swirled. Someone had hurt him. Some female. A growl of her own laced with jealousy and anger vibrated in her chest.

Tempering Steel - Book 2 ~ Coyote Bluff Series
Coyote Bluff is a small, quaint town in the mountains of Virginia. With its diner run by Mama, the police force of one and a single stop light it's much like every other small town in America. Well, until you take a closer look.
Feel free to come visit Coyote Bluff... but keep an eye on the wildlife.
Author Bio:
Lea lives in Western New York with her hubby, three children, and miscellaneous critters. Before the rug rats, she lived a life of adventure, following her husband all over Europe with the US military. She's slept in a car outside Paris, drove six hours just to see tulips in the Netherlands, and knocked ash from her shoes at Pompeii. Now she spends her time in life's adventures at soccer games, PTA meetings and school plays.
Lea has loved reading from a very young age, spending many sleepless nights devouring books. Science fiction and paranormal were her favorite genres to read as a teenager, and that love bled into her adult life. She started writing during a bout of insomnia, to fill time, and found it filled a creative void. Now she communes regularly with the characters in her head and tries not to laugh out loud when they say something funny.
When Lea isn't reading, writing or corralling kids, she enjoys watching movies and sciencey shows, or just kicking back and listening to some music.

Dual Cover Reveal ~ Christmas Stalkings & Slash And Burn by Jade Jamison
Christmas Stalkings
Val, Brad, and the kids decide to take a short but needed
winter vacation to get away from it all and enjoy each other’s company, but one
thing is stopping them from relaxing like they should. Since fronting her new
band Val Hella, Val has discovered the darker side of fame—she has a stalker,
one who seems intent upon stepping up his game to get what he wants, and the
ruin of their vacation becomes the least of their worries.
Slash And Burn
Is theirs a match
made in heaven...or hell?
Nick Channing, drummer for Fully Automatic, has never taken sex seriously. He’s had fun and met dozens of women—mostly one-night stands—and he prefers it that way. From his parents to his friends, he’s witnessed love and relationships firsthand and believes women are nothing but a headache.
Nick, Brad, and Val team up again to launch her new band Val Hella. There’s one problem, though: they still need a bassist. They audition dozens of women, trying to find the perfect one and settle on Sabrina, known onstage simply as Sinna, a bad ass metal head who’s perfect for the band: pierced, tattooed, dressed in black from head to toe, and she handles her bass with precision. She is a force to be reckoned with and Nick is smitten.
When Nick gets her alone the first time to lay on the charm, he’s met with a coolness he’s never experienced. Sabrina is mysterious and thoroughly unimpressed with Nick and his behavior, and that’s when he decides he has to have her. As he falls headlong for her, he discovers her secrets, one dark shadow at a time. He thinks she loves him back, but he can’t be sure. By the time he’s completely down the rabbit hole, his heart’s so entangled, he fears he might not be able to save himself. Can she save him or will she wreck him for all time?

Book Series - Yea or Nay?
I recently dove back in to the world of highlanders and time travelers in Diana Gabaldon's An Echo In The Bone. It's been at least a couple of years since I last read a book in this series but at two pages in I was completely immersed in the world of Jamie and Claire Fraser once again. And did you see the series on Starz? If you're a fan of the books you need to watch the series - very well done!
I love a good series, especially one that can transport you back so quickly with each book. But, I'm not a fan if each book has a cliffhanger to try and get you to buy the next book. I guess that's why I chose to write my Fairfield Corners series as a series of stand-alone books. Writing each book is like visiting an old friend. As long as the characters "tell" me their stories I will keep writing them.
Some of my favorite series are: The Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon, The In Death Series by J.D. Robb, The Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich, and The Trueblood series by Charlaine Harris (up until the last book).
How do you feel about book series? What is/are your favorite series?
Happy reading!

A New Direction
I survived (and thoroughly enjoyed) my first author events. The local author fair went well but I was disappointed in the overall attendance. As the only local event of this kind I thought it would be advertised and promoted more than just in the library and on their website. My Fairfield Corners covers received quite a few compliments ~ thank you Sprinkles on Top Studios! And, I sold three books so I am considering the day a "win".
Indie Unmasked was a lot of fun. This was my first experience at an author event of this type. After drawing a blank at the first question about my books and stumbling through an answer (I was just a bit nervous) I found my footing and was definitely more coherent the rest of the day. There were some fabulous authors there and I wish I had more time (and the courage) to talk with them. I did get to meet author Amber Nation who I chat with on Facebook (if you love romance you should read her Brown County series - I definitely recommend them) and I had the opportunity to fangirl over Mia Sheriden - her novel, Archer's Voice, is one of my favorite books this year. My best friend (acting as my assistant) had a chance to scope out everyone's swag and came back with some ideas we may try in the future. And more compliments on the Fairfield Corners covers!
The masquerade was fun - it was great to hear some of the attendees fangirling about being able to spend time with their favorite authors.
As the odometer ticked off the miles on the trip home I thought about this whole author gig and how I've been stressing myself out over NaNoWriMo and word counts and how the story was falling flat. I realized that Beneath The Lake is just not ready to written... yet. I love the story and concept but it's just not there and trying to force it isn't working. Therefore, I am putting it back into the "maybe later" file in my head and I will not be finishing NaNo this year.
I don't want to lose my love of writing. Seriously, what other career choice is as perfect for an introvert with an active imagination? Stressing about it makes it seem more like a job and I already have one of those.
After some serious thought my goals for 2015 look like this:
Writing may never pay all the bills but I need the creative outlet. Never fear, there are many more stories to come.
Until next time!

Book Focus: Home To Stay by Jane Leopold Quinn
Home to Stay
by Jane Leopold Quinn
Nickie Grace moved to Parkersburg to rehab an old house and
forget a disastrous marriage, but a prowler threatens her newfound peace. The
vandalism gets more personal and creepier with every instance. It's a small
town, and the investigating deputy, Hank Crossman, is everywhere. Nickie's not
ready to get involved but she can't resist the hunk's seductive moves -- or the
adorable stray dog he adopted. A summer affair might be fun, not to mention
that with a sheriff's deputy guarding her body, how much safer could she be?
Deputy Hank Crossman loves to play the field. He's a
commitment-phobe, who keeps everyone at arm's length, including his alcoholic
father and the stray he's named simply 'Dog.' Now, he's determined to seduce
Nickie Grace. Fortunately for Parkersburg, he takes his job much more seriously
than he does his affairs. His frustration at not being able to solve the
perverted and dangerous crimes against Nickie grows along with his attraction
to her, and despite the dangers they become immersed in an intense lust-affair.
Then Nickie almost loses her life, and Hank discovers that
everything that's been happening is because of his past. He wants to bolt, get
out of her life, but this time he just might come home to stay.

EXCERPT PG-rated
Through a tragic accident, Hank Crossman
lost almost every person he ever loved -
by the time he was 18.
Excerpt:
During
the funeral, he sat in the woods outside the church leaning against a tree
trunk, grinding his back over the rough bark like some sort of medieval
flagellation. It was his fault. Ricky would have known better than to dive in
if he’d been there. He was probably showing off. He choked back the agony of
imagining Ricky inside the coffin. They’d never go tramping through the woods,
never play dumb video games in Ricky’s basement. He’d never see his floppy
blond hair and happy blue eyes, never have a friend again. That was for sure.
He’d never get that close to anyone again.
And he never intended to come
back to Parkersburg after college, but got sucked in when a judge refused to
release his good-for-nothing father from rehab unless a family member vouched
for him.
His grief and guilt lead him to the Marines where he
lost his heart to the innocent victims of war. He thought he'd left
his hometown forever, but his conscience forced him to return to take
care of his alcoholic father. If he had to be home, at least he was
safely ensconced in his career as a lawman. For a long time, he was able
to do his job and still cut himself off from any personal relationships.
Nickie Grace changed all that.
Excerpt:
Hands shaking and in a rush, she hooked
the snap between her breasts, jiggling a little to settle herself in the cups.
She rubbed at the burning prickles on the back of her neck. Crossman. It was
Crossman. She knew it was him before she turned around.
He stared at her from the
darkened hallway, his rapt gaze heating her skin. She crossed her arms over her
breasts. To give the devil his due, he drew his gaze up to her face. She
wondered if he was married, because the way he looked at her made her hope he
wasn’t.
Nickie Grace’s ex was the
quintessential cheating bastard. Rehabbing her great-aunt’s house in
Parkersburg, Iowa would be her refuge from her feeling of failure. Until someone started playing “pranks” on
her, and Hank, the cop, started wanting to protect her.
Excerpt:
“Could
your ex be behind the pranks?” Hank asked quietly, his voice breaking the
silence.
Her
gaze jerked back to him. “No, it’s not his style. And besides, why would he? He
doesn’t care.”
“Are
you sure? Some men don’t like to lose what they consider their property. What
does he do?”
“No,
it’s not him. I’m sure of it. He’s glad to be rid of me.” It was hard to
sniffle back tears quietly so he wouldn’t hear.
“What’s
his name, Nickie?”
“Why?
It doesn’t matter. It’s not him.”
“You
don’t know that for sure.”
Oh,
God. Why would Rod do this? He wouldn’t. What would be the point? He’s proud
and arrogant but not possessive. She was sure it wasn’t him, but Hank had put
doubts in her mind.
“Okay, I’ll find out who’s
doing this, though.” He pushed off the railing and strode toward her.
She intends to keep Hank at a
distance until one night they dance and being in his arms felt soooo good.
Bio
Sensual fantasies were locked in my mind for years until a
friend said, "Why don't you write them down?" Why not, indeed? One
spiral notebook, a pen and the unleashing of my imagination later, and here I
am with more than a dozen books published. The craft of writing erotic romance
has become my passion and my niche in life. I love every part of the creative
process — developing characters, designing the plot, even drawing the layout of
physical spaces from my stories. My careers have been varied — third grade
school teacher, bookkeeper, secretary — none of which gave me a bit of
inspiration. But now I'm lucky enough to write romance full time — the best job
in the universe!
